Strategies in Glioma-Surgery
2011
1.1 Epidemiology and classification of gliomas Malignant glioma is one of the most feared diseases in the industrialized nations. About 77% of all malignant tumors within the central nervous system are gliomas. There are about 18.000 newly diagnosed cases annually within the USA (9/100.000 inhabitants per year) and the disease causes about 13.000 deaths each year. Statistically this is a higher loss of life-time than all other tumor-entities together (Schwartzbaum et al., 2006). About 45-50% of these gliomas are histologically classified as gliobalstoma multiforme (GBM) the most aggressive type of glioma which is classified as WHO grade IV (following the classification of Kleihues et al., 2…
A review of 640 Oral squamous cell carcinoma cases in Nigeria
2016
Background Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most prevalent malignant neoplasm in the oral cavity and accounts for 70% to 90% of all oral malignant neoplasms. The aim of this study was to examine the demographic distribution of OSCC in five Tertiary Health centres in Nigeria. Material and methods All cases diagnosed as OSCC during the period from 1970 -2014 were retrieved from the records of five teaching hospitals in Nigeria. Hematoxylin and eosin stained histological slides of all cases that had a diagnosis of OSCC were reviewed for confirmation and inclusion. Data from all the centers was collated at the University College Hospital, Ibadan by 2 researchers. The data was entered …
Cytochemical Cell Typing of Metastatic Tumors According to their Cytoskeletal Proteins
1986
Conventional staining methods alone are often insufficient to make accurate histodiagnosis of malignant tumors. However, additional information about the cell type and the state of differentiation of tumor cells can be provided by several molecular markers. To be relevant diagnostically, these markers must be conservative, i.e. expressed not only in well differentiated tumors but also in poorly differentiated tumors and in metastases. These criteria are fulfilled by certain components of the cytoskeleton, notably the proteins forming the intermediate-sized filaments (IFs) and the desmosomal plaque proteins.
Interactive computerized morphometric analysis for the differential diagnosis between dysplasia and well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the prostate
1989
To distinguish prostatic dysplasia (or adenosis) from well differentiated adenocarcinoma on transrectal needle biopsy, a morphometric study was conducted on 20 cases of adenosis and 20 cases of well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the prostate. About 100 cells for each patient were analyzed by means of a computerized image analyzer, and mean nuclear diameter, mean nuclear area, mean form factor and number of cells in eight classes of nuclear diameter were studied. The best predictors of malignancy (evaluated by means of Receiver Operating Characteristics curves) were mean nuclear area greater than 28 mu2, presence of more than 5% of cells with nuclear diameter greater than 6.15 mu, and mea…
On the distribution and subspecific variation of the Tunisian- Algerian endemicDelphinium sylvaticum(Ranunculaceae)
2015
The morphology and biogeography of the Tunisian–Algerian endemic Delphinium sylvaticum Pomel has been studied in Tunisia. As presented here, this study resulted in an enlargement of the known distribution and in the description of two new subspecies: D. sylvaticum subsp. ichkeulianum El Mokni, Domina, Sebei & El Aouni and D. sylvaticum subsp. purpureum El Mokni, Domina, Sebei & El Aouni native to Tunisia in Mogods and in the northeast regions, respectively. Besides ecological features and clearly separated distribution, the two new subspecies show very well differentiated morphology. An updated distribution map and a diagnostic key of the studied taxa are provided.
